(Most henna kits you get from Joann's, Michaels, Walmart, or any other craft store only have around 4-10 grams of henna powder, only sifted 1-2 times with a Lawson dye content of ~1-2 percent!
The price of this kit reflects the quality and quantity of the product-plus you get a handmade sealant and aftercare balm!)
I recommend for Pregnancy Henna, Henna Crowns, Henna for small children and those with sensitivities to order the Lavender Essential oil as it is the least likely to cause sensitivities.
These are the same ingredients I use in my Henna Body Art Business.
**Makes approximately 360+ Grams (12-14 Ounces) of SMOOTH STRINGY Henna Paste of ~15-20 Cones depending on the size of the cones and each cone can dozens of small/medium size designs
*If you make the whole batch you can freeze the large piping bag or individually filled cones in the freezer for up to 4-6 months, after that it will start to loose its consistency and color. (takes about 20 minutes for a one to thaw and be ready to use out of the freezer)
What you'll need:
• Approximately 8-10 ounces of Lemon Juice and Water Mixture (equal parts lemon juice and water)
• Glass bowl to mix
• Spatula
• Spoon
• Glass
• Saran wrap
Directions:
Step 1: Mix henna powder and sugar together
Step 2: Stir in approximately 6-8 ounces of lemon/water mix
Step 3: Stir in 30 ml of Essential oil (mix well)
Step 4: Continue to Stir in additional lemon/water mix until you reach a toothpaste consistency (I like my paste a little thinner)
Step 5: Cover with saran wrap and let it sit overnight (6-8 hours) in dark warm place (I set it on the kitchen counter)
Step 6: Uncover and mix well, you will notice it is now silky and smooth, add lemon/water mix if necessary until you reach your desired consistency (be careful not to add too much liquid as it will cause the paste to become runny)
Step 7: Place the piping bag in the glass and fill all the henna paste and tape the bag shut (you can place the stocking in the piping bag and strain your henna if desired but the powder is 5 times sifted so it is not completely necessary)
Step 8: Cut the tip of the piping bag and fill your henna cones (do not fill all the way to the top as it will make it difficult to seal shut)
Step 9: Seal your henna cones- remove the pin, push down the henna paste to the tip, replace the pin, then tape the top of the henna cone shut
Step 10: Enjoy and Create Art!
What is Henna
Henna is a small tree/shrub which is found in Southern Asia, Northern Africa and Northern Australasia.
The leaves of the Henna Plant are dried, milled and sifted to create a powder which is mixed with liquids such as water and lemon juice to create a Henna Paste.
When henna is first removed from the skin it has an orange stain and darkens over the next 24-48 hours to a maroon/brown color.
Soles of the feet and palms have the thickest layer of skin which take up the most Lawson therefore the hands and feet will have the darkest and most long-lasting stains.
Natural Henna stains only brown to maroon color. Products sold as "black henna" or "neutral henna" DO NOT contain henna, but instead are made from other plants or from other substances all together.
PPD (Para-phenylendiamine) which is found in most "black henna" can cause severe allergic reactions, with blistering intense itching, permanent scarring and permanent chemical sensitivities.
Henna has been practiced for centuries in Northern Africa, Southern Asia, Middle East, and Europe. It has been used across all religions for various reasons such as marriage, pregnancy, circumcisions, holidays and much more. Certain designs have different meanings for different cultures. Some find good health, fertility, wisdom, spiritual protection, or luck in henna designs.
